An exceptional antique Burmese hsun-ok, a traditional ceremonial offering vessel used in Buddhist devotional practice, distinguished by its elegant architectural silhouette and extraordinarily intricate hand-incised yun lacquer decoration.
Rising 22 inches from a broad pedestal base to a slender, pagoda-like finial, this striking vessel features a rich vermilion-red lacquer ground contrasted with densely ornamented black panels. Delicate incised designs in warm terracotta, muted green, and golden-yellow depict a lively procession of animals, birds, fantastical creatures, and scrolling botanical forms.
The remarkable density and intricacy of the decoration reward close examination. Graceful deer-like animals, birds, and mythical beasts emerge from an elaborate tapestry of foliage, their forms rendered in finely articulated lines. Repeating geometric borders frame the compositions, creating a beautiful rhythm across the vessel's curved surfaces.
Executed in the traditional Burmese yun technique, in which designs are incised into lacquer and filled with contrasting pigments, the decoration reflects the skill and artistic traditions of Myanmar's celebrated lacquerware workshops.
The vessel separates into its traditional components, including the ornamental lid and finial, deep offering bowl, removable decorated tray, and pedestal base. The beautifully ornamented tray is particularly noteworthy, featuring an exceptionally dense composition of animals and botanical motifs against a dark lacquer ground.
Historically, hsun-ok vessels were used to present offerings of food and other gifts to Buddhist monks and monasteries. Their distinctive tiered forms and elaborate decoration reflect the importance of these ceremonial objects in Burmese religious and artistic life.
Dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, this substantial example is both a fascinating expression of Southeast Asian decorative arts and an extraordinary sculptural accent for a collected interior.
