This is a matching pair of vintage guardian lion (often referred to as Foo Dog) statues, crafted from copper with intricate cloisonné enamel work and gilded finishes. The lions are depicted in a seated, alert posture, with one resting its paw on a decorated brocade ball (representing the world) and the other on a playful cub (representing nurturing).
The bodies of the lions are covered in a vibrant turquoise enamel, richly decorated with multi-colored floral and scrolling vine motifs in pink, red, yellow, blue, and white. The heads, manes, and facial features are heavily gilded, showcasing deep, curly detailing. They wear ornate gilded collars with decorative bells hanging from their necks. The gilding continues onto their paws and the detailed bases. The hollow underside shows the gilded interior, typical of this type of metalwork.
This pair is a classic decorative accent for entryways, mantels, or traditional interiors, symbolizing protection and prosperity.
