Model No. 159E | After the 1552 Jörg Sigman Renaissance Masterpiece
An exceptional and increasingly rare Harold Studios, Inc. of Chicago museum-reproduction wall sculpture, retaining its original Harold Studios label, handwritten Model No. 159E designation, original suspension hardware, and beautifully aged faux-bronze patina.
Produced during the golden age of mid-century American decorator arts, this monumental 24-inch convex shield was inspired by the celebrated 1552 parade shield attributed to master Augsburg armorer and goldsmith Jörg Sigman, one of the most admired ornamental armor designs of the European Renaissance.
At its center is a commanding Gorgoneion (Medusa), the ancient protective symbol believed to ward off evil and safeguard its bearer. Surrounding Medusa is a richly molded series of Roman military and civic crowns (coronae) connected by intricately intertwined serpents, symbolizing power, vigilance, protection, and eternity.
The elaborate outer frieze unfolds as a sculptural narrative celebrating the legendary history of ancient Rome, including the she-wolf nursing Romulus and Remus, references to Roma Aeterna (Eternal Rome), and heroic figures such as Horatius Cocles and Marcus Curtius, alongside military trophies, standards, armor, shields, banners, and allegorical figures rendered in remarkable high relief.
Executed in heavy fiber-reinforced composition and finished in Harold Studios' original multi-layer faux-bronze patina, the surface displays rich antiqued tones, bronze highlights, and subtle terracotta undertones designed to emulate centuries-old Renaissance metalwork.
