An exceptional and richly ornamented 18th-century Louis XVI carved giltwood mirror, distinguished by its magnificent openwork crest featuring sculptural birds, wheat sheaves, flowering branches, and elaborate neoclassical ornamentation.
The impressive architectural superstructure is centered by a classical urn overflowing with finely carved wheat sheaves, flanked by a pair of beautifully detailed birds with outstretched wings. Above rises an exuberant floral wreath composed of blossoms, leaves, and scrolling foliage, while delicate beaded garlands and sweeping acanthus scrolls extend symmetrically across the crest.
The elaborate composition embodies the refined naturalistic vocabulary of the Louis XVI period, celebrating classical symmetry, pastoral imagery, and the decorative elegance of late 18th-century French craftsmanship.
The substantial rectangular frame features finely carved egg-and-dart and beaded moldings, with dramatic pendant foliate swags descending from the upper corners. The lower corners are finished with delicate carved ornamentation, lending architectural balance to the highly decorative crest.
The richly textured gilt surface displays an attractive, warm antique patina with subtle variations in tone that accentuate the depth and intricacy of the carving. The mirror glass exhibits gentle age-related silvering imperfections, enhancing its historic character.
Measuring an impressive 53 inches in height and 36 inches in width, this commanding mirror is ideally suited for display above a mantel, console table, or in a formal entryway, grand salon, or sophisticated interior.
A distinguished example of Louis XVI decorative artistry, combining exceptional visual presence, intricate craftsmanship, and desirable private collection provenance.
