Oil portrait on canvas of a man with a globe, attributed to giuseppe nogari. Venice, 18th century
origin venice, italy
period 18th century
artist attributed to giuseppe nogari (venice, 1699 – venice, 3 june 1763) venetian painter, a pupil of antonio balestra, and a member of the venice painters’ guild from 1726. He became famous for his ‘character heads’ and portraits, particularly those of elderly men, philosophers and fictional characters. His style drew on the chiaroscuro of giovanni battista piazzetta, the influence of rembrandt and the softness of rosalba carriera’s pastels. He had an international clientele, including count carl gustav tessin, the british consul joseph smith, marshal von der schulenburg and, through francesco algarotti, augustus iii of saxony for the dresden gallery. From 1740, he worked for carlo emanuele iii of savoy on the decoration of the royal palace in turin. He was one of the founders of the academy of fine arts in venice and served as its president in 1762–63.
