An exceptionally large antique mold-blown glass dispensing fountain, most likely French and dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, circa 1890–1910.
Standing approximately 60 cm (23.6 in) tall, the fountain has an unusually architectural form with a tall cylindrical neck, double rounded sections, faceted shoulders and a substantial rectangular body. The pale aqua-clear glass is richly molded with diamond borders, pointed geometric motifs and a distinctive circular medallion to the front.
The fountain retains an old turned wooden dispensing spigot, fitted into the glass through a cork sealing sleeve. The removable spigot incorporates an internal liquid passage and rotating wooden control. The cork shows considerable age and wear consistent with long use.
The interior retains a faint alcoholic scent, suggesting that the fountain may historically have been used for wine, liqueur, eau-de-vie or another alcoholic beverage rather than simply water. Large glass fountains of this type were used in domestic as well as commercial settings, including cafés, shops and liquor merchants.
The glass has a subtle green-aqua tint together with the irregularities and character associated with early mold-blown glass production. No manufacturer's mark has been found, and the maker remains unidentified.
Its monumental 60 cm scale makes this a particularly striking decorative object even when not used functionally. It would work beautifully as a sculptural piece in a kitchen, dining room, bar, wine room or collection of antique French glass.
