Contrechant is an original contemporary abstract painting by French artist Sophie Dumont.
The composition develops like a musical dialogue between shapes, colors and rhythms. A sweeping burgundy curve creates the dominant movement, while vertical structures, circles and interlocking geometric forms establish a series of visual counterpoints.
Burnt orange, deep green, red, dusty pink, muted blue, ochre and broken ivory create a sophisticated palette in which warm and cool tones continually respond to one another.
The title Contrechant comes from the musical term for a secondary melodic line that accompanies a principal melody while retaining its own identity. In the painting, each form similarly appears to develop its own voice while remaining part of a larger composition.
Painted in oil on linen through successive layers, the surface retains visible traces of the artist’s process. Variations in opacity, rubbing, underlying colors and deliberately irregular textures soften the geometric construction and give the work depth and individuality.
About the Artist
Sophie Dumont is a French contemporary painter based in Normandy. Her work explores the relationships between structure, memory, color and material through paintings built from successive layers of oil paint.
Known internationally for her Bibliothèques series, in which books become architectural structures and symbols of memory and transmission, Dumont has progressively extended this research into geometric and architectural abstraction. In her recent compositions, curves, verticals, circles and colored planes create carefully balanced structures that may suggest figures, instruments or fragments of architecture without becoming explicitly figurative.
Her paintings have been exhibited in galleries and museums and are held in private collections internationally. Her work has also been selected for book covers, publications and film productions.
