This is a finely crafted antique gilt bronze sculpture of Mahakala, a fierce and powerful protector deity in Tibetan Buddhism. The figure is depicted in a squatting, dynamic pose upon a lotus base, with a fierce expression, bulging eyes, sharp fangs, and a crown adorned with small skulls. He holds a curved flaying knife in his right hand and a skull cup (kapala) in his left, symbolizing the cutting of ego and the consumption of negative forces. His body is adorned with an elaborate necklace of severed heads and a garland of skulls. A large, pierced, flame-shaped mandorla (aureola) surrounds the figure, painted in a deep red pigment with gold details. The sculpture retains much of its original gold gilding, with a rich, aged patina and traces of polychrome paint on the base and mandorla.
