A five-piece Chippendale-style game set, a square game table and four matching side chairs, made by a Southern California craftsman from American sugar pine with genuine leather upholstery and hand-cut joinery throughout.
THE TABLE
A shaped, serpentine-edged top is inset with genuine leather and framed by a molded edge, over a shaped apron. It stands on cabriole legs with hand-carved acanthus leaves at the knees and ball-and-claw feet.
THE CHAIRS
Each chair has a shaped crest rail with carved ears, a pierced and interlaced back splat, and cabriole front legs with carved acanthus knees and ball-and-claw feet, with genuine leather drop-in seats.
ABOUT THE STYLE
Chippendale is named for Thomas Chippendale, the London cabinetmaker whose 1754 pattern book, The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, is widely credited with making him the first furniture maker to lend his own name to a style. The pierced, interlaced splat seen on these chairs is one of its most recognizable signatures. Card and game playing was a central pastime of 18th-century Georgian society, and the dedicated game table became a fixture of fashionable homes in Britain and colonial America.
FOR THE COLLECTOR
Chippendale's Director ran to three editions (1754, 1755 and 1762) and shaped furniture-making across Britain and the American colonies. A set like this is a serious undertaking for a single maker: five pieces, eleven carved cabriole legs with ball-and-claw feet (the chairs' back legs are plain, as in period examples), four pierced splats that must match one another, and leather fitted by hand. Factory sets of this form are typically machine-carved; here, every carving was done by hand.
AN HEIRLOOM AND A FUTURE ANTIQUE
Every joint was cut by hand and every carving done by hand, so no two of this maker's pieces are alike. Built with traditional joinery, this set is made to be repaired, refinished and passed down rather than replaced. Handcrafted, one of a kind and made in America, it will increase in value over time as it becomes a true antique.
Use it as a game or card table, a breakfast table, or a small dining set for four.
Serious offers are welcome.
