A matched Sheraton-style entryway console and side chair, made by a Southern California craftsman in striking zebrawood with olive ash burl.
THE CONSOLE
The console follows the Sheraton playbook: a gently serpentine front, clean straight lines, and slender square legs that taper to the floor. The top is a panel of olive ash burl edged in zebrawood, set over a zebrawood apron.
THE CHAIR
The matching side chair pairs a shaped zebrawood crest rail with a vase-shaped splat in olive ash burl, square legs joined by an H-stretcher, and a tiger-stripe upholstered drop-in seat.
ABOUT THE STYLE
Sheraton takes its name from Thomas Sheraton, whose Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing-Book (published 1791 to 1794) defined the late-18th-century taste for lightness and restraint: straight tapered legs, delicate proportions, and dramatic contrasting woods. In America, Sheraton designs were central to the Federal period that furnished the homes of the young republic. Pairing exotic zebrawood with pale burl is exactly the kind of bold wood contrast Sheraton-era makers prized.
THE WOODS
Zebrawood comes from West Africa and is named for its dramatic dark-and-light striping. It is dense and notoriously difficult to work, which is why zebrawood furniture is uncommon. Olive ash burl has a swirling, cloud-like figure that cannot be reproduced; no two burl panels are alike.
FOR THE COLLECTOR
Thomas Sheraton is not known to have run a workshop of his own; his influence came entirely through his published designs, which cabinetmakers on both sides of the Atlantic adapted. In early-19th-century New York, makers such as Duncan Phyfe worked in the Sheraton manner. The style's emphasis on striking veneers and contrasting woods is why a pairing like zebrawood and burl suits it so well. Matched sets from a single maker, made at the same time from the same stock, are especially hard to come by.
AN HEIRLOOM AND A FUTURE ANTIQUE
Built by hand with traditional joinery, this set is made to be passed down rather than replaced. Handcrafted, one of a kind and made in America, it will increase in value over time as it becomes a true antique.
Ideal for an entryway, as a writing desk and chair, or as a vanity.
