This vintage mid century modern Eames Sofa Compact Model S-473 was produced by Herman Miller between 1974-1980. The sofa features original Alexander Girard "Giant Stripes" fabric, a beautiful multicolored multicolor striped wool fabric designed by Girard in 1959. The compact sofa is well-built and solid and features a collapsible backrest with a double pad backrest and single seat cushion finished with a reinforcing cord welting detail. The sofa seat is supported by fabric-reinforced rubber webbing on a steel and wire-spring armature and the steel sofa frame is black enamel with silver chrome-plated tubular steel legs. Metal manufacturer's label to frame reads 'Herman Miller'. Paper manufacturer's label to underside cushion reads 'Made by Herman Miller Inc.'. Inventory label to frame reads 'Houston Chronicle 5297'.
Charles and Ray Eames designed the Eames Sofa Compact in 1954 based on a built-in sofa the couple had designed for their Pacific Palisades home in the 1940s. This freestanding version has been in continuous production ever since. The iconic mid century design is clean and minimalist - great for small spaces and providing a modern light and airy profile in larger spaces. Perfect for home or office.
CONDITION
Good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use. The sofa retains it's original Girard upholstery which has some visible signs of wear including some areas of pilling and minor marks and stains with one small burn hole and one small discoloration spot on the seat as per photos. The seat cushion has flattened from use overtime. The backrest cushions remain padded and supportive. The sofa frame is generally bright and clean. Reupholstery services available upon request.
