An intriguing pair of antique I.C.S. Reference Library volumes published by the International Correspondence Schools of Scranton, Pennsylvania. These substantial early educational reference books feature richly aged brown and black leather and cloth bindings, gilt spine lettering, and decorative raised-style spine detailing, offering the character of an old architectural library or traditional gentleman's study.
The warm tan-brown volume, numbered 8, is devoted to historic decorative arts and design. Its contents include plant analysis, distemper color, bookcover designing, carpet designing, oilcloth and linoleum designing, wallpaper designing, architectural design through The American Vignola, and color harmony. An especially interesting reference to the decorative techniques and design education of the early twentieth century.
The companion black-and-brown volume, numbered 222, provides a contrasting heavily patinated binding, with gilt I.C.S. Reference Library lettering and additional technical reference material. Together, the two volumes create a handsome pairing for an antique book collection, library shelf, study, or interior designer's display.
Dimensions: Each book measures approximately 9 inches high and 6 inches wide when lying flat. The two volumes measure approximately 3 inches across their combined spines.
Condition: Antique condition with age-related wear and patina. Both volumes exhibit rubbing, scuffing and wear to the leather bindings, particularly along the spines, corners, and edges. The black volume displays surface loss and mottling to the spine, while the tan-brown volume has visible wear and losses at the upper spine and corners. The page edges show age-related wear. Interior pages photographed retain legible printed text. These volumes are offered with their naturally distressed antique character and are very well suited for decorative display or careful reference use.
Sold together as a pair of two books.
