Grounded — “be grounded, as roots do, in order to grow, and never forget where you come from.”
this piece belongs to a collection inspired by a yoga practice — by the sensation of rooting, of spreading your roots deep into the ground and illuminating the darkness of grounding, so that you may feel whole and safe.
the collection also explores the mysterious attraction between people. When you make space for another person and their roots begin to reach toward yours in a luminous, almost inexplicable way, the unfamiliar becomes familiar, the impossible becomes possible, and the relationship finds the form it was always seeking.
for this particular piece, frankie cesare imagined a single root suspended above a table — not as a static branch, but as a living sculptural line whose form could continue to change even after it entered the space. A root does not grow according to a predetermined geometry. It searches, divides, turns, reaches and adapts. The same idea defines this light: its branches can be opened, tightened and individually shaped, allowing the composition to establish its own relationship with the table and the architecture surrounding it.
light and shadow are equally important to the work. For cesare, light without shadow is incomplete. As illumination passes through the intricate network of copper strands, the structure does not simply illuminate the surface beneath it; it creates a second, less tangible composition through shadow. The physical sculpture and the shadows it produces become two expressions of the same object, changing according to the position of the light, the viewpoint and the way the branches have been shaped.
designed by frankie cesare and handcrafted in greece together with his specialized team for f+m fos, each piece is individually made to order. Every branch is constructed from more than 500 strands of copper wire, twisted, separated and shaped entirely by hand to create its organic root-like structure.
what appears spontaneous is the result of an extraordinarily demanding process of making. Hundreds of individual strands pass repeatedly through human hands as they are gathered, twisted, separated, redirected and shaped. There is no mould determining the final form. Through this process, copper gradually loses the visual language of an industrial material and begins to resemble something that has grown rather than something that has been manufactured.
the copper is electrostatically coated and then finished by hand using traditional icon-painting powders, creating layered earthy, golden, copper and oxidised effects. The finish is not intended to create a perfectly uniform surface. Its subtle variations reinforce the organic character of the work, allowing colour, light and texture to emerge differently across the structure. As a result of this entirely handmade process, subtle variations make every piece individually distinctive.
the branches remain flexible and can be shaped individually during installation. Much like a natural root system, some areas can be opened more widely and others kept tighter, allowing the final sculptural form and volume to respond to the space in which it is installed. In this sense, installation becomes the final stage of the creative process: the work does not impose one fixed silhouette on the architecture, but can enter into a dialogue with it.
the standard piece measures approximately 110 cm in length and can extend to approximately 115 cm when fully shaped. Its sculptural volume is approximately 35–40 cm when opened and may vary according to the desired arrangement. The suspension cables are adjustable during installation according to ceiling height and the desired position of the light.
the listed price applies to the piece in any requested length up to 110 cm.
each piece bears the f+m fos label and the designer’s signature and is accompanied by an individually numbered certificate of authenticity. The handcrafted structure carries a lifetime warranty. Electrical components and light bulbs are excluded from this warranty.
the result sits between illumination and sculpture: a functional object whose complexity is revealed gradually — first through its form, then through its light and shadow, and finally through the realization of the human work concealed within every branch. Signed by maker, labeled by maker,
