Hand-knotted in wool and originating circa 1950-1959 from Afghanistan, this 3x4 vintage Afghan Gabbeh rug joins Rug & Kilim’s renowned Vintage collection. The field features a rich crimson background with a single stylized leopard in black, gold, and ivory.
On the Design:
Among the apex predators of Central Asian folklore, the spotted leopard represents power, agility, and spiritual protection within ancient tribal mythologies. Mid-century Gabbeh rugs frequently translated these revered creatures into graphic textile art, allowing individual weavers to display creative freedom through bold animal portraiture. Rather than relying on repetitive border structures or complex central medallions, the design places the wild beast directly against an open color field, maximizing visual impact through striking scale and contrast. The generous pile height and dense wool fibers give the feline figure a plush, dimensional weight underfoot, elevating a simple nomadic floor cover into a captivating piece of textile sculpture. The result is an exceptional example of mid-century folk narrative that feels remarkably modern in its graphic strength and spatial discipline.
The field unfolds as a striking tribal narrative centered on a large, stylized leopard stretching diagonally across a deep crimson-red ground. The feline figure is rendered with expressive geometric angles, featuring a charcoal-black body filled with intricate golden-yellow rosette spots and crisp ivory outlines. The expressive head showcases gold eyes, sharp white whiskers, and a curled tail that adds dynamic movement to the open red backdrop. The chromatic palette relies on vibrant dyes, contrasting the rich crimson background against charcoal black, honey gold, and soft parchment cream. Surrounding the field is a simple, dark-toned border framing the central figure, complemented by multi-colored overcast edges. Subtle abrash throughout the hand-dyed yarns introduces gentle tonal shifting across the surface. This work serves as a character-rich focal point for entryways, small gallery spaces, and curated architectural interiors.
