A striking large-scale 19th-century French oil painting depicting a picturesque group of historic stone houses in Périgueux, Dordogne. Weathered stone façades, warm terracotta rooftops and an exterior staircase create a richly atmospheric architectural composition, capturing the timeless character of provincial France.
Painted circa 1880 by Jean-Georges Pasquet (1851–1936), the work was executed after a composition by Émile Charles Dameron (1848–1908), an established French landscape painter who exhibited at the Paris Salon. During his formative years, Pasquet studied and interpreted the works of other artists, following a longstanding tradition of artistic training.
The painting bears Pasquet's signature, accompanied by an inscription referencing Dameron. An additional handwritten inscription on the reverse reads “Maison du Pont Cassé – Périgueux (1880)”, identifying the location depicted and dating the work. A French gallery specializing in painters of the Périgord has confirmed both the attribution to Pasquet and the identification of the location, noting that the appearance of the site has changed considerably since the painting was executed.
Presented in its substantial period-style frame, this authentic antique oil on canvas offers both historical interest and exceptional decorative presence. Its generous proportions and warm, earthy palette make it particularly well suited to French country, traditional and thoughtfully layered interiors.
