The Panton Chair is the world’s first all-plastic, single-piece cantilever chair, designed by Danish architect Verner Panton in the late 1950s. At first, around 15 to 20 furniture makers turned down the concept because shaping plastic into a self-supporting cantilever design seemed physically impossible and there were concerns for its marketability. In 1963, Willi Fehlbaum (founder of Switzerland’s Vitra) along with Rolf Fehlbaum and Manfred Diebold agreed to take on the difficult engineering challenge. Plaster-cast and early fiberglass models were developed. The first set was showcased at the 1967 Cologne Germany Furniture Fair, and the first iteration of mass produced- done in cold-molded rigid polyurethane foam- was released in 1968. In the 1970s Vitra shifted to colored thermoplastic polystyrene (Luran S), identifiable by small ridges under the seat bend, but breakage defects forced Vitra to halt production completely in 1979. In 1990 advances in technology allowed Vitra to resume manufacturing the chair in rigid polyurethane foam, and ones made in the current aughts are of Polypropylene…
These late are 1990s chairs. I have two pairs. I have priced separately as one on one of the two has a small but of scuffing whereas the other is more pristine.
This set is the one with a small bit of marking on the one chair in the pair (shown), hence priced lowed than my other pair,
