This is a stunningly luminous California desert scene by John W. Hilton, one of the foremost painters of the American Southwest and a leading figure of the Smoketree School (also known as the Desert Painters). Golden light bathes rugged mountain peaks while sparse desert shrubs and low vegetation punctuate the foreground under a soft, glowing sky.
John William Hilton was born September 9, 1904, in Carrington, North Dakota. After working in the gem and jewelry trade (designing pieces for Hollywood clients), the Depression led him to the California desert in the early 1930s. There he opened a curio and gem shop near Indio (across from the Valerie Jean Date Shop), supported himself as a singer and guitarist, and dedicated himself to painting. Sketching trips and friendships with Maynard Dixon, Nicolai Fechin, Jimmy Swinnerton, Clyde Forsythe, and others shaped his approach. He later lived in Twentynine Palms, co-founded local art institutions, mined optical-grade calcite for the war effort, and maintained lifelong ties to the desert’s geology, natural history, and culture.
Hilton exhibited widely (including successful shows at New York’s Grand Central Galleries), and counted among his circle figures such as Dwight D. Eisenhower (who displayed one of Hilton’s works in the Oval Office), General George Patton, and Howard Hughes. He is celebrated for mixing beeswax with his oils to achieve a distinctive luminous “Hilton Glow.”
This painting, titled "Majesty of the Hills," is characteristic of Hilton’s mature desert oeuvre: an atmospheric, light-filled interpretation of the California desert’s mountains and open terrain that prioritizes the unique quality of desert illumination over anecdotal detail. It exemplifies the style that earned him recognition as a premier interpreter of the region’s vast skies, sculptural landforms, and radiant atmosphere—works that remain highly sought by collectors of California and Southwest art.
The overall piece with frame is 43"W x 31"H x 3"D. The visible area of the painting is 35.5"W x 23.5"H. Signed lower right. A classic example of Hilton’s celebrated desert landscapes, ready to hang.
