An expressive oil-on-canvas portrait by Jan De Ruth, depicting a dark-haired woman with a softly lowered gaze. Confident, flowing brushwork and a warm palette of ochre, peach, olive, and deep brown give the composition a quiet, contemplative beauty. Signed “Jan De Ruth” at the lower right.
The painting is presented in a substantial vintage frame featuring raised scrolling foliage, an antiqued gold-tone finish, and deeply contrasting dark recesses. A wide, pale linen liner and narrow gold inner border complement the painting’s warm tones while providing a refined transition to the richly ornamented surround.
Comparative research identified similar framing on other De Ruth portraits, suggesting a period gallery presentation and the possibility that the frame is original to the painting. The originality of the framing has not been independently confirmed.
Jan De Ruth (1922–1991) was a Czech-born American artist recognized for his portraits and figurative paintings, particularly his depictions of women. His career included gallery and museum exhibitions, and he authored instructional books on portrait and figure painting.
The painting is tentatively dated to the 1960s. It is undated, and the approximate period is based on stylistic characteristics and comparable works rather than a documented creation date.
Provenance: Acquired from the Joan Dodge estate in Rancho Mirage, California, where the portrait hung in her bedroom above her nightstand.
Overall framed dimensions: 19 inches wide × 22 inches high.
Condition: Vintage condition with visible age-related wear. The frame and inner border exhibit scattered finish losses, small chips, and cracking to the decorative finish. The linen liner shows some discoloration. Small surface irregularities and scattered light-colored spots are visible on the painting in the close-up photographs.
