This antique 19th-century French Majolica Toby jug features the classic character of Mr. Punch, seated on a green chair. The earthenware pitcher is hand-painted in vibrant, high-gloss lead glazes typical of historic French faience workshops.
Mr. Punch is depicted with his iconic exaggerated features, including a prominent hook nose, rosy cheeks, and a wide grin. He wears a deep cobalt blue coat over a yellow vest, pink breeches, and a black tricorn hat that forms the pouring spout. A curved, bright green stalk handle completes the back of the vessel. The glossy glaze covers the entire character, contrasting nicely with the creamy white interior lining.

The pitcher is structurally sound and holds its shape well. The colorful glazes remain bright and glossy with minimal fading. There are a few tiny glaze flakes along the top edge of the black tricorn hat spout and a small, shallow chip on the green handle (as shown in the close-up photos). The underside base has an unglazed rim with expected shelf wear, an old handwritten ink notation, and a faint incised mark or cross beneath the glaze. less
