Tall forms in rust red, dove gray-blue and black rise from the lower edge against a white ground, with mustard and olive pieces gathered at their bases like plinths. The two largest shapes lean toward each other near the center, and black arcs curl along the bottom corners. Pencil lines drift across the gray, and scraped passages and torn paper edges give the stone-like masses a worn, chalky surface. Cox paints people, places and creatures from memory and names the work only when it is finished, and this one has the stillness of a row of figures seen in a courtyard long ago. The colors are weighty but the white keeps the whole piece open.
Bold yet calm, it suits a living room, a library or an entry. The rust and slate tones go with leather, charcoal and warm wood, and the white ground keeps a room feeling open. The square format is easy to place. The painted edges allow it to hang unframed. It pairs well with a tall plant, a stone sculpture or a bench below, and the vertical forms work in narrow wall spaces as well as wide ones.
Acrylic on Canvas, 30 x 30 x 1.5 in (76.2 × 76.2 × 3.8 cm). Unframed, with painted edges.
Lee Cox works in acrylic and collage on gallery-wrapped canvas, adding and removing layers intuitively until torn and cut shapes, scratched pencil lines and flat fields of color settle into balance. Edges are painted and the work hangs without a frame, ready for the wall.
Lee Cox is a contemporary abstract artist based in Carmel, California. After a 35-year career in telecommunications, he moved from lifelong collector of abstract art to dedicated studio painter. His practice is rooted in memory and impression, each painting a layered meditation on a moment, emotion or lived experience. Working in acrylic and collage without a fixed plan, he builds depth and texture through intuitive addition and subtraction, guided by memory and music, until the emotional truth of the moment feels realized. His titles offer context while leaving room for interpretation. His work has been exhibited in solo and juried group shows across California and nationally, and is held in private collections throughout the United States.
