Strips of printed paper, scraps of numbers and fine type, sit among brick red, black, mustard, peach and green shapes, as if a page of calculations had been torn up and rearranged. Navy and black forms weigh down the corners, and a tall column of newsprint runs down the lower center. Pencil lines loop through the gaps between the pieces. The surface is dense and close-grained, with small torn edges overlapping everywhere you look. Cox begins with no plan and lets a memory sharpen over many layers, and the printed fragments here feel like pieces of one still being sorted out. The title came last and suits it.
A good fit for a study, a library or a living room, where the detail rewards long looks. The red, peach and black tones suit leather, walnut and cream walls, and the printed fragments add a sense of story to a quiet space. The painted edges allow it to hang unframed. It also suits a home office or desk wall, where the printed scraps and numbers feel at home, and where the dense surface can be read up close.
Mixed Media on Canvas, 30 x 30 x 1.5 in (76.2 × 76.2 × 3.8 cm). Unframed, with painted edges.
Lee Cox works in mixed media and collage on gallery-wrapped canvas, layering paper, printed fragments, acrylic and scratched pencil lines through an intuitive process of addition and subtraction. Edges are painted and the work hangs without a frame, ready for the wall.
Lee Cox is a contemporary abstract artist based in Carmel, California. After a 35-year career in telecommunications, he moved from lifelong collector of abstract art to dedicated studio painter. His practice is rooted in memory and impression, each painting a layered meditation on a moment, emotion or lived experience. Working in acrylic and collage without a fixed plan, he builds depth and texture through intuitive addition and subtraction, guided by memory and music, until the emotional truth of the moment feels realized. His titles offer context while leaving room for interpretation. His work has been exhibited in solo and juried group shows across California and nationally, and is held in private collections throughout the United States.
