Slate blue and teal forms rise in the upper half like cliffs, set against a cream ground and layered with olive, ochre and rust that read as sunlit grass and weathered rock. Heavy black shapes sit low in the composition like tide pools or the shadows between boulders, and an open cream space near the center lets the eye rest. Pencil lines trace contours through the acrylic, and torn paper edges overlap with thin washes and scraped passages. Cox lives in Carmel-by-the-Sea, and the shoreline is present in the palette without being described. The painting feels broad and steady, a headland held in memory rather than copied from a view.
Calm but commanding, it suits a living room, a study or a dining room. The blue-gray and rust tones work with leather, linen and warm wood, and give a coastal note without literal imagery. It reads well from across a room. The painted edges allow it to hang unframed. It also gives a quiet corner or a long hallway a sense of distance, and the rust accents tie in easily with terracotta, brass or aged wood nearby.
Acrylic on Canvas, 30 x 30 x 1.5 in (76.2 × 76.2 × 3.8 cm). Unframed, with painted edges.
Lee Cox works in acrylic and collage on gallery-wrapped canvas, adding and removing layers intuitively until torn and cut shapes, scratched pencil lines and flat fields of color settle into balance. Edges are painted and the work hangs without a frame, ready for the wall.
Lee Cox is a contemporary abstract artist based in Carmel, California. After a 35-year career in telecommunications, he moved from lifelong collector of abstract art to dedicated studio painter. His practice is rooted in memory and impression, each painting a layered meditation on a moment, emotion or lived experience. Working in acrylic and collage without a fixed plan, he builds depth and texture through intuitive addition and subtraction, guided by memory and music, until the emotional truth of the moment feels realized. His titles offer context while leaving room for interpretation. His work has been exhibited in solo and juried group shows across California and nationally, and is held in private collections throughout the United States.
