A block of saturated orange sits near the center, ringed by deep navy, pale butter yellow and slate gray. Small orange circles bounce around the edges, and torn shapes in white and navy seem to leap between them. Some edges are crisp and graphic, others are scraped back, and loose pencil lines run through the gray like a quick sketch made in passing. Childhood is one of the themes Cox returns to, and the painting has the feel of a remembered afternoon outdoors rather than a portrait of two figures. The creature is suggested through shape, color and movement alone, with the orange as the bright, running center.
The orange and navy make a confident focal point above a sofa, a console or a dining table. Blue-gray upholstery, walnut and natural fibers suit it, and it can also bring energy to a neutral room. The square format is easy to hang. The painted edges allow it to hang unframed. In a playroom or family room it adds humor without turning childish, and it gives a hallway or stairwell a bright point of arrival that people notice first.
Acrylic on Canvas, 30 x 30 x 1.5 in (76.2 × 76.2 × 3.8 cm). Unframed, with painted edges.
Lee Cox works in acrylic and collage on gallery-wrapped canvas, adding and removing layers intuitively until torn and cut shapes, scratched pencil lines and flat fields of color settle into balance. Edges are painted and the work hangs without a frame, ready for the wall.
Lee Cox is a contemporary abstract artist based in Carmel, California. After a 35-year career in telecommunications, he moved from lifelong collector of abstract art to dedicated studio painter. His practice is rooted in memory and impression, each painting a layered meditation on a moment, emotion or lived experience. Working in acrylic and collage without a fixed plan, he builds depth and texture through intuitive addition and subtraction, guided by memory and music, until the emotional truth of the moment feels realized. His titles offer context while leaving room for interpretation. His work has been exhibited in solo and juried group shows across California and nationally, and is held in private collections throughout the United States.
