Wide planes of sage and pale mint fill most of the canvas, broken by a rust-red square at the lower left and small orange circles skipping along the upper edge like balls in flight. Black and tomato-red scraps of torn paper cluster near the center, and fine pencil lines drift across the quiet greens. The surface is chalky in some places and dense in others. Cox paints the creatures he meets or imagines as an essence of shape, color and movement rather than a likeness, and here that essence is the bounce and scatter of the small round forms against the calm field. Titles come last for him, and this one fits easily.
The soft greens and clay reds suit a calm living room, a study or a bedroom, adding movement without noise. It sits comfortably with linen, light wood and warm white walls, and it holds up against deeper greens or earthy plaster. The painted edges allow it to hang unframed. The restrained palette lets it sit near books or a window without competing, and the red square gives a quiet anchor to a pale wall.
Acrylic on Canvas, 30 x 30 x 1.5 in (76.2 × 76.2 × 3.8 cm). Unframed, with painted edges.
Lee Cox works in acrylic and collage on gallery-wrapped canvas, adding and removing layers intuitively until torn and cut shapes, scratched pencil lines and flat fields of color settle into balance. Edges are painted and the work hangs without a frame, ready for the wall.
Lee Cox is a contemporary abstract artist based in Carmel, California. After a 35-year career in telecommunications, he moved from lifelong collector of abstract art to dedicated studio painter. His practice is rooted in memory and impression, each painting a layered meditation on a moment, emotion or lived experience. Working in acrylic and collage without a fixed plan, he builds depth and texture through intuitive addition and subtraction, guided by memory and music, until the emotional truth of the moment feels realized. His titles offer context while leaving room for interpretation. His work has been exhibited in solo and juried group shows across California and nationally, and is held in private collections throughout the United States.
