A pale sky-blue ground opens behind a crowd of torn shapes in olive, moss, ochre and burnt orange, with a hot red-orange corner at the upper left. Near-black forms gather at the center like branches or fallen leaves, and a few short orange strokes dangle from the bottom edge. Some passages are thin and translucent, others scraped back so the color beneath shows through. Cox starts each painting with no plan and adds and removes layers over days until a memory comes into focus, and the many overlaps here read like seasons of that process stacked together. Pencil lines wander through the acrylic, and the warmth is that of a late autumn afternoon.
Square at 30 inches, it gives a living room, dining room or entry a strong seasonal note. The greens and golds sit well with oak, leather and cream upholstery, while the blue ground keeps the palette light. It works alone above a sofa or console. The painted edges allow it to hang unframed. Its warmth carries well in rooms that get afternoon light, and the thin scratched lines reward a closer look from a sofa or a hallway.
Acrylic on Canvas, 30 x 30 x 1.5 in (76.2 × 76.2 × 3.8 cm). Unframed, with painted edges.
Lee Cox works in acrylic and collage on gallery-wrapped canvas, adding and removing layers intuitively until torn and cut shapes, scratched pencil lines and flat fields of color settle into balance. Edges are painted and the work hangs without a frame, ready for the wall.
Lee Cox is a contemporary abstract artist based in Carmel, California. After a 35-year career in telecommunications, he moved from lifelong collector of abstract art to dedicated studio painter. His practice is rooted in memory and impression, each painting a layered meditation on a moment, emotion or lived experience. Working in acrylic and collage without a fixed plan, he builds depth and texture through intuitive addition and subtraction, guided by memory and music, until the emotional truth of the moment feels realized. His titles offer context while leaving room for interpretation. His work has been exhibited in solo and juried group shows across California and nationally, and is held in private collections throughout the United States.
