A magnificent, fully realized 23-inch Chinese blue and white porcelain table lamp, styled to absolute perfection and fully updated for modern use.
Originally hand-crafted as a ginger jar during the late Qing Dynasty (Tongzhi to Guangxu period, c. 1870–1900), the body displays a brilliant, hand-painted Chinoiserie motif of a majestic phoenix resting among blooming peonies and dense foliage. The rich indigo cobalt brushwork is thickly hand-applied, offering a tactile, slightly raised paint texture that contrasts beautifully against the soft, pale-greenish celadon glaze ground.
This piece exhibits exceptional historic workshop characteristics, including distinct hand-thrown potting rings lining the deep interior walls, an unglazed top rim, and native kiln anomalies like iron specks and pinhole dimpling embedded in the glaze. The jar was historically converted into a lamp via a hand-drilled hole through its fully glazed, recessed base.
The lamp stands on a highly unique, custom three-tier stacked base assembly that provides an elegant, architectural silhouette. The lower tiers combine an ornate antique collar foot—featuring a subtle hint of historic red and gilt lacquer wear along its detailed rim—expertly layered over a traditional black-finished wood block base with hand-carved openwork fretwork detailing.
This intentional multi-toned baseline allows the aged red notes on the lower mount to beautifully play off and mirror the vibrant tone of the custom coral-terracotta linen textured drum lampshade.
The upper hardware features an authentic, beautifully patinated vintage "fat boy" key-turn socket shell configured for a direct-mount screw-on shade, creating a clean profile with no harp or finial required.
The fixture has been completely rewired with a brand-new electrical cord, combining historic character with absolute safety and peace of mind.
When illuminated, the rich, organic textile hue of the shade creates a warm, radiant glow that perfectly balances and elevates the cool cobalt palette of the porcelain.
A sophisticated statement piece with excellent proportions, well-suited for Grandmillennial, traditional, or transitional interiors.
