Around it small tiles of pink, mustard, teal, taupe and black cluster at the edges, and a black hourglass-like shape rises at the top right. Corcelle, a printmaker who designed the award-winning book 60 Years of North American Prints, builds her surfaces from layered papers sorted by color and expressive lines, exploring contrasts of color, shape and texture. The red here feels composed rather than shouted, like a single orchestral note held across the whole canvas.

With its wide horizontal format, it makes a strong statement above a sofa, a long sideboard, or in a loft or office where large-scale color is welcome. The red anchors a room, while the pale ground and small accents keep it from feeling heavy. It pairs well with charcoal, walnut, cream and deep teal.

Medium: Mixed media on canvas, 2024. Dimensions (height x width x depth): 36 × 48 × 1 1/2 in.

Like much of Corcelle's work, the surface is built up in layers of paint, collaged paper, graphite and scratched lines, so the painting reads one way from across the room and another up close. Expect small discoveries of texture, handwriting and color the longer you look, which makes it a work that keeps rewarding everyday viewing.

Christiane Corcelle is a French-American mixed media artist based in Massachusetts. Her intuitive, layered practice spans painting, printmaking, collage, and de-collage, building richly textured surfaces that invite close exploration. Guided by curiosity and openness to process, she transforms color, shape, and found materials into works that are both dynamic and contemplative.

Drawing inspiration from global experiences and cultural textures, Corcelle has exhibited widely across the United States and internationally, including shows in France, Vietnam, China, Cuba, Peru, and Azerbaijan. Her work is represented in public and private collections worldwide, among them the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), the Boston Public Library, the Art Complex Museum, the Contemporary Art Center, the Vietnam Fine Arts Association in Hanoi, the Danang Fine Arts Museum, the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, Universidade Feevale in Brazil, Las Casas de las Américas in Cuba, and the Permanent Collection of Château d’Orquevaux in Orquevaux, France.
