Beautiful and substantial Austin Productions “La Madre” sculpture from the Acoma Series, designed under the direction of Pamela Pierce and dated 1983.
This impressive sculpture depicts a seated Native American mother cradling her child within a broad, softly triangular form. The composition is wonderfully simplified and sculptural, with sweeping lines of hair and drapery framing the mother’s face and flowing downward toward the child. The restrained facial features and gently rounded silhouette give the piece a quiet, contemplative quality, while the strong geometric massing reflects the Southwestern influence for which the Acoma Series is known.
The sculpture has a beautiful pale stone-colored finish with subtle speckling and an intentionally aged, softly distressed surface that enhances its hand-finished character. The visual simplicity of the palette allows the form itself to become the focus, giving the piece a sophisticated presence that works equally well in Southwestern, Pueblo-inspired, organic modern, rustic contemporary, Mid-Century Modern and neutral minimalist interiors.
At approximately 13.5 inches tall, 16 inches wide and 15.7 pounds, “La Madre” is unusually substantial and has the weight and presence of a true statement sculpture. Its wide, low composition makes it particularly striking on a console, credenza, mantel, pedestal or large coffee table.
The Acoma collection was created as a group of Southwestern-inspired sculptures associated with Austin Productions art director Pamela Pierce, whose designs drew heavily from the visual traditions and geometric forms of the American Southwest. “La Madre” beautifully captures that aesthetic through its simplified shapes, restrained ornamentation and strong emphasis on the bond between mother and child.
This example remains in its original finish and is in excellent vintage condition with little to no visible wear. It has only received a gentle cleaning in order to preserve the integrity and character of the original surface. The felted base remains in place, and a copy of the original sculpture information card is included with the purchase.

Constructed in Austin Productions’ Durastone, a cast material made using crushed stone in a slurry mixture that was then hand-cast and hand-finished, the sculpture has a satisfyingly dense, stone-like feel and substantial weight.
A wonderful and increasingly difficult-to-find example from Austin Productions’ Southwestern period, and a particularly evocative piece for collectors of Pamela Pierce, Acoma Series sculpture, Southwestern modernism, or vintage Austin Productions decorative art.
Excellent original vintage condition with little to no wear. The surface retains its intended distressed and textured appearance. Lightly cleaned only; no restoration has been performed.
Any photographs showing furniture or additional décor are included only to demonstrate styling and scale. Only the sculpture is included with the purchase.
