An exceptional and rare piece of Early American vernacular furniture, a modern day working home sculpture. This slant-front bureau cabinet/secretary desk dates to the early 19th century. I submitted it for review with a group of early american experts who agree that based on wood and construction style it was likely created by a regional country cabinetmaker from the Ohio Valley region, most consensus leaning towards Kentucky in origin. The maker was likely influenced by high style secretary and created their own rendition.
Constructed in two separate pieces, the upper bookcase features multi-pane cabinet doors designed to showcase fine porcelain or rare books. Please note that the left cabinet door is currently missing two panes of its original, historic bubble glass, offering a wonderful opportunity for a simple restoration or to be left as-is to showcase its storied past. The lower section features a traditional slant-front lid that opens down to a beautifully fitted desk interior complete with vertical pigeonhole letter slots, a central open cubby space, and small accessory drawers accented with light-wood fronts.
The base presents a unique and functional cabinetry layout consisting of a large central cupboard door flanked by two slender vertical side cabinets. This desk features a clever hidden compartment built into the rear of the bottom left vertical drawer, offering a delightful historical talking point. Each door is embellished with a central diamond-shaped wood string inlay that perfectly coordinates with the delicate geometric perimeter inlay bordering the desk lid. The entire structure is raised on stately turned legs (a hallmark of the Sheraton style) that gracefully taper down to original bun feet. This provincial masterpiece strikes a perfect balance between sophisticated Sheraton symmetry and the rustic warmth of early American country living.
• Era / Period: Early 19th Century (c. 1810–1830)
• Style: Sheraton / Early American / Federal
• Region / Origin: United States (Ohio Valley or American South)
• Materials: Solid Cherry (with light wood decorative inlays) and historic glass
• Condition Notes: Very Good Antique Condition overall with structural stability and a gorgeous, rich amber-brown wood patina. The left upper door is missing two panes of original bubble glass. The remaining glass panes show beautiful historic waviness. The piece exhibits a gentle distribution of minor cosmetic scuffs, surface wear, and character marks consistent with its 200-year age. I am assuming at some point in it's life it has been refinished, but I do not have any definitive information.
