An exceptional pair of signed modernist ceramic portrait sculptures featuring a stylized gentleman and lady, each crowned with an extraordinary removable silver-tone metal hat.
Richly finished in deep chocolate-brown matte ceramic, the sculptural faces exhibit beautifully restrained expressions, elongated noses, and delicately modeled almond-shaped eyes. Their simplified, architectural forms create a striking contrast with the elaborate metallic headpieces.
The woman's dramatic sculptural hat features an elegant topknot, while the gentleman's distinctive headwear complements his angular features. The exceptionally lightweight metallic lids appear to be aluminum or a similar metal and exhibit subtle surface variations that contribute to their artistic character.
Both hats lift away to reveal small interior compartments, giving these remarkable pieces a delightful combination of sculptural beauty and practical function.
Each ceramic portrait bears an incised artist's signature. Although the maker has not yet been identified, the coordinated designs suggest a common artistic origin.
The interplay of earthy pottery, metallic surfaces, minimalist facial modeling, and imaginative headwear creates a compelling modernist composition with distinctly postmodern sensibilities.
Beautifully displayed together on a console, bookshelf, or cocktail table, these unusual objects bring personality, character, and sculptural interest to a thoughtfully curated interior.
