A rare and powerful original 1940s mid-century modernist oil painting on board by the listed swedish artist harald öman (1906–1946). This captivating piece showcases a dynamic and colorful scene from a northern swedish shipyard, featuring dry-docked ships and towering hulls painted in bold ochres, deep reds, and vivid blues. A beautiful detail is the swedish flag flying subtly on the right. Because öman tragically passed away at the young age of 39, his artistic output was highly limited, making his surviving works incredibly scarce and highly collectible.
born in örnsköldsvik along the high coast of ångermanland, sweden, harald öman’s life was defined by both immense physical struggle and artistic triumph. Stricken by a severe illness at just five years old, he lived with a significant physical disability that frequently confined him to his room for long periods. Despite these limitations, his artistic passion led him to stockholm, where he studied under some of sweden's most influential modernist masters at the prestigious wilhelmson painting school and otte sköld painting school.
because of his limited mobility, öman developed a sharp eye for his immediate surroundings. He became deeply celebrated for his striking portraits and his powerful, gritty depictions of northern swedish industrial landscapes, local factories, and bustling maritime shipping docks. This painting perfectly encapsulates his signature style: a beautiful tension between structural industrial shapes and vibrant, emotional color expressionism.
despite his tragically short life, öman was highly regarded by his peers and contemporary critics, who widely predicted a brilliant and illustrious artistic future for him.
