broad bands of golden ochre, deep crimson and soft white sweep across the upper half of the painting like a glowing horizon at sunset. Below, energetic strokes of dark blue, black and green create the impression of rugged rocks and churning water. Heavy impasto and palette knife work give the surface remarkable depth, allowing the light to catch the paint from different angles.
