Embodying … Read more A striking, highly collectible mid-century 7-piece French majolica seafood service crafted by the historic Faiencerie de Saint-Clement in France. Embodying classic mid-century table scape luxury, this iconic set features an immersive marine aesthetic.
Each individual plate (25.5 cm diameter) and the large centre platter (37.5 cm diameter) showcase beautifully moulded, realistic oyster shell recesses washed in a striking multi-toned gradient of deep forest green, sea turquoise, and pearl white enamels. The perimeter is fames with an intricate nautical moulded rope trim. At the heart of each piece sits a raised, beautifully textured central slice of half-lemon, serving as a realistic wedge reservoir for citrus or mignonette sauce.
All 6 plates bear the hand-written underglaze production marks distinctive to mid-century Saint-Clement artisanal work - see image. The centrepiece platter features a rich black protective counter-glaze on the underside, a traditional structural technique applied during production to maintain shape and stability in the kiln. Due to the completely handmade, batch-mixed nature of 1950s mineral glazes, the large platter features a slightly greener tonal hue and variation than the plate stack, demonstrating the distinct character of genuine mid-century craftsmanship.
