A striking mid-20th-century french impressionistic still life composition depicting an elegant "vanitas" or classical library scene. Executed in oil on rigid isorel (compressed hardboard), the artwork features a rich assembly of a lit crimson candle in a silver candlestick, antique leather-bound volumes, a dark ceramic pitcher, a metallic copper jug and gracefully draped teal fabric.
the artist f. Martel, employs a structured, blocky brushwork technique, laying down distinct, unblended planes of pigment that construct form and shadow with tactile intensity. Of particular interest to collectors, the artist painted on the textured mesh screen side of the vintage board, allowing the structural grid of the compressed wood fibres to subtly emerge through the paint film, adding depth to the background plane.
the reverse side features the authentic, historic violet manufacturer stamp of the parisian art dealer "couleurs fines - encadrements / e.garner / paris", certifying its geographic origins and materials. Signed "f. Martel" in fluid script on the lower right. This piece has an attribution mark,
