Oil on panel “Veronica of the Virgin”, 19th century - Spain
This extraordinary oil on panel was painted in early 19th-century Spain. It is a portrait of the Virgin Mary, of exceptional quality. Iconographically speaking, the Veronica of the Virgin—also called the “true portrait” or the Vera Icon of Mary—is a specific devotional type that represents the face of the Virgin Mary either fully frontal or subtly tilted, configured as a direct and faithful portrait. Unlike the Holy Face of Christ, which originates from the relic of the Passion cloth, this Marian variant is based on the medieval tradition of early portraits historically attributed to the brushes of Saint Luke, considered achiropoietae images (not created by human hands) or direct visual testimonies from nature. The depiction is stripped of narrative elements and other figures to concentrate all the mystical and emotional weight on Mary's sacred features, inviting the faithful to an intimate, reverent, and profoundly compassionate contemplation.
Stylistically, the drawing is firm yet delicate in the definition of the eyebrows, the refined nose, and the small lips, combined with a soft, painterly modeling of the flesh tones that seeks idealization without losing a sense of human connection. The garments display fine, meticulous folds, combining formal restraint with a taste for understated detail. A very subtle, linear, golden halo or nimbus surrounds her head, underscoring her sanctity. The composition explicitly avoids depicting the hands or other attributes of the Passion, focusing all the theological meaning on the purity of the maternal face, conceived as a mirror of divinity and a direct channel for private prayer within the domestic or conventual sphere of Golden Age Spain.
Restored in June 2026.
