Measuring 48 cm long, the fish has a strongly graphic silhouette, with a broad head, open mouth, individually cut scales and an unusually dramatic tail rising sharply from the body. The carving retains a dry, naturally aged surface in warm amber-brown tones, with visible tool marks and grain contributing to its folk-art character. Particularly distinctive is the tightly curled scroll carved beneath the base of the tail, which appears to reference a stylized wave or water whorl, visually reinforcing the aquatic subject. The small carved teeth within the open mouth are an especially engaging detail. The form closely relates to Japanese yokogi, carved fish-shaped crosspieces used within a jizai-kagi, the adjustable hook assembly traditionally suspended above an irori hearth. Known examples were commonly carved in keyaki and pierced so that a vertical rod could pass through the body. This example has no surviving bore, suggesting either an unusual decorative version or a former functional piece subsequently altered. The carp carried auspicious associations in Japan, particularly with perseverance, strength and achievement. Good antique condition with wear appropriate to age and use. Two areas of faint reddish staining are visible to both sides.
