Splendid hand-painted, glazed ceramic sculpture in the round, dating back to 1930 or 1940, created by Arturo Pannunzio and signed by the artist with a metal nib engraved on the skirt "Pannunzio." The work depicts a peasant girl wearing a bonnet, a finely decorated black bodice, and a full red skirt. She is caught in the act of catching a goose, while in her other arm she holds a basket filled with roses and small flowers applied in relief. She is surrounded by three beautifully modeled geese in dynamic, sculptural poses. The execution technique involves casting into a mold, followed by meticulous manual cold finishing for the details of the plumage, the grass at the base, and, in particular, the delicate floral composition executed petal by petal using the "fatto a mano" technique. The color palette is distinguished by the use of glossy, brilliant glazes alternating with areas of satin finish, lending depth and realism to the volumes. The work bears a signature engraved on the skirt, partially covered by red vitreous enamel, certifying its direct attribution to the renowned ceramic sculptor Arturo Pannunzio. The attribution lies not only in the presence of the autograph signature, but also in the artist's unmistakable stylistic features: the soft expressiveness of the female face, the graceful pose of the child figures, and the mastery of modeling small farmyard animals, elements that constitute the pinnacle of his celebrated production of small decorative sculptures.
Information on the artist and/or manufacturer:
Arturo Pannunzio (Campobasso 1891 – Milan 1953) was one of the most important sculptors and sculptors of Italian ceramics in the first half of the 20th century. Having settled in Milan in 1920, he initially collaborated with the Tansini factory, then became inextricably linked to the prestigious V.B.C.M. (Vincenzo Bertolotti Ceramiche Milanesi) factory in the 1930s. Pannunzio distinguished himself by creating a vast repertoire of small, decorative plastic pieces for the home, with a fresh, spontaneous, and intensely poetic feel, much loved by the bourgeoisie of the time. His creations were exhibited at major art shows and were so popular with the public that the factory continued to remake his most successful designs even in the years following his death. Today, the works signed by Arturo Pannunzio are considered important examples of ceramic sculpture and figurative Art Deco in Italy, sought after internationally for their exquisitely fresh execution and exceptionally high quality craftsmanship.
