This plaster bas-relief is a replica of the Assyrian relief depicting Ashurbanipal hunting—originally from the North Palace at Nineveh and now housed in the Louvre. The sculpture shows the king on horseback, drawing his bow. The back of the panel bears the Louvre's metal seal, embedded directly into the plaster. It measures 39 x 37 cm. The bas-reliefs from the palace at Nineveh are extraordinary stone sculptures from the Assyrian Empire depicting Ashurbanipal’s lion hunts, military campaigns and battles, and scenes of construction involving slaves. They were created in the 7th century BC to decorate royal residences and glorify the king's power. Ashurbanipal (also known as Sardanapalus)—who lived from 685 BC to 631 BC—was King of the Assyrians. The so-called Royal Library of Ashurbanipal was discovered by Austen Henry Layard in the mid-19th century.
