Handcrafted … Read more A pair of late 19th-century English copper candlesticks combining Japonisme influence with the decorative vocabulary of the Aesthetic Movement. Handcrafted in copper, each candlestick rises from a broad domed circular base into an unusually sculptural stem modeled as segmented bamboo, curling into an open spiral before returning to the central upright. The upper section incorporates a projecting bamboo-form branch beneath a stylized foliate drip pan. Above this sits a ribbed, bud-shaped candle cup, giving the composition an organic character while retaining a strong linear silhouette. The asymmetry, bamboo imagery and naturalistic ornament are characteristic of the Japanese influence that became increasingly important within British decorative arts during the later Victorian period. The copper has developed a deep brown surface with warmer reddish highlights and areas of natural green verdigris around joints, recesses and edges. This aged surface emphasizes the modeled construction and gives the pair considerable visual depth.

Good antique condition with surface wear consistent with age and use, natural patination and verdigris. There is a small dent to one base; overall the pair remain very presentable.
