Hand-knotted in wool and originating circa 1950-1959 from Afghanistan, this 3x8 vintage Gabbeh runner joins Rug & Kilim’s Vintage collection. It depicts leopards, gazelles, and village dwellings framed by a micro-checkerboard border on a taupe field.
On the Design:
Among mid-twentieth-century tribal textiles, multi-figure landscape runners represent a rare sub-genre of pictorial Gabbeh craft where the weaver constructed an expansive visual panorama rather than a solitary emblem. Woven entirely from memory without calculated draft papers or workshop schematics, these long-format works recorded the delicate ecological balance of high-altitude mountain life. Here, feline predators, fleeing gazelles, and rural hearth dwellings co-exist along a single loom axis, acting as both an intimate agrarian journal and a protective talisman for nomadic encampments. The uninhibited spatial arrangement and substantial wool foundation preserve the raw, unpretentious spirit of original village looms, presenting serious collectors with an extraordinarily preserved artifact of mid-century Central Asian folk art.
Stretching along a luminous, abrash-softened taupe-beige field, the long canvas unfolds in a captivating vertical narrative structured into distinct horizontal registers. The upper section features a large, gracefully curved leopard rendered in un-dyed ivory wool with crisp dark espresso rosette spots, accompanied by a smaller leopard cub positioned just above. Beneath them, the central field transitions into an idyllic village landscape showing gable-roofed homes, mountain flora, and leaping gazelles rendered in soft sage green, terracotta, and sky blue. A third spotted big cat anchors the lower boundary in full profile, completing a balanced rhythmic progression down the runner's length. Encircling the entire story is a narrow multi-stripe border detailing delicate micro-checkerboard and saw-tooth guard bands in navy blue, crimson, and ivory. This masterly interplay of saturated earth tones, playful figurative forms, and generous negative space provides designers with an extraordinary statement piece to introduce historic depth, narrative warmth, and graphic charm into gallery corridors, entryways, or expansive living spaces. The accompanying book, Oriental Lifestyle by Jane Graining, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B059) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
