Here is an early 1900s Limoges bust of Alexandre Brongniart (1770-1847) in a bisque finish by Camille Tharaud, fashioned after the famous sculptures by Jean-Antoine Houdan.
Alexandre was the son of prominent French architect Alexandre-Theodore Brongniart, who was commissioned by Napoleon bonaparte in 1804 to design the layout of the famous Pere Lachaise Cemetery, and was a personal friend of Houdan.
Camille Tharaud (1878-1956), was a French artist, who after suffering a head injury at the age of 36, was sent to recover in Limoges. It was here that he began working with ceramics and enamels, for which he is now known.
This bust of Alexandre is of high-quality porcelain in a bisque finish, sits on a porcelain base and stands 8" tall. Three minor single scuff marks to the bisque finish, appropriate for age and use. No chips, cracks or repairs.
Excellent piece for a collection, in a library or sophisticated room as a featured piece!
