A newly refinished sapele mahogany buffet / sideboard with brass pulls attributed to D.S. Vorster & Co., made in South Africa c. 1960s. Seldom seen in the United States, Vorster’s works blend Scandinavian and American mid-century influences while retaining a more traditional character.
The sapele is particularly striking, with long bands of ribbon-like grain running across the top, doors, and drawer fronts. Depending on the light, the surface shifts between warm reddish brown and deeper golden tones, giving the otherwise restrained cabinet a considerable amount of visual movement.
Its proportions and detailing recall both Paul McCobb and earlier Danish modern case pieces of the 1930s and 1940s. Small brass pulls are paired with inset keyholes outlined in brass. These traditional details contrast nicely with the comparatively spare, modern construction.
The case is integrated directly into the leg structure rather than simply resting on a separate base. Slender tapered legs are joined by low stretcher bars, an efficient form of structural support that allows the cabinet to remain remarkably light for its size.
A central bank of three drawers is flanked by storage cabinets with adjustable shelving on either side. The upper drawer is fitted with divided silverware storage and has been newly lined in velvet. The sideboard has been fully refinished, preserving the character of the sapele while bringing the grain and color back to life.
It is unmarked, though it came with chairs marked D.S. Vorster. We are certain it was produced in South Africa in the 1960s.
