The composition is dominated by a distinctive stepped medallion surrounded by symmetrically arranged geometric and stylized plant motifs. The rich palette of brick red, ivory, dark blue, turquoise and ochre underlines the decorativeness of the entire work. The central field is closed by a multiple ornamental border. The geometric composition, wide light border and cross-arranged medallions continue the tradition of West Caucasian rugs of the Kazak type. This is probably a workshop interpretation of this pattern. The marking "Turkmen" on the reverse side can be considered a later commercial designation, because the decor does not correspond to typical Turkmen rugs with regularly repeating tribal güls. Geographical designation: northwestern Iran, Caucasian pattern of the Kazak type. Date: 20th century. Dimensions: length 232 cm, width 186 cm. See less
