A representative portrait of a middle-aged man, painted in oil on canvas. The sitter is dressed in a dark suit with a tie and holds a book in his hand. The facial expression is calm, focused and reserved, with an emphasis on the psychological characteristics of the personality. The painting is done in a realistic, cultivated manner with sensitive modeling of the face, accurate capture of proportions and thoughtful work with light. The author pays increased attention to details, especially the eyes and hands, while leaving the background neutral and subdued so as not to disturb the main motif. The color scheme is muted, harmonious, typical of representative portrait painting of the second half of the 20th century.
The author of the work is Jan van der Loo (1908–1978), a Belgian painter specializing in figurative and portrait work. In his work, he focused on a realistic concept of the figure, an emphasis on the psychology of the sitter and a high level of craftsmanship in painting. In the later period of his life, he worked in France. Portraits from the 1960s, to which this work dated 1968 belongs, represent a mature phase of his work and are valued for their calm authority, balanced composition and timeless character. The painting is signed and dated in the lower right corner "van der Loo 68". It is set in a high-quality period frame with gilded profiling and a green inner strip, which suitably complements the color of the painting and underlines its representative character. The canvas is hung on the original wooden blind frame. This is a high-quality gallery portrait from the second half of the 20th century, suitable for representative interiors, historical spaces, offices or collectors' collections focused on European figurative painting.
