A large pastoral scene by the Belgian painter Henry Schouten, a prominent representative of realistic animalistic painting at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The painting depicts a shepherd with his dog and a resting flock of sheep in a landscape in soft early evening light. Schouten applies his characteristic strengths here: careful capture of the anatomy and expressions of the animals, a lively painterly style and impressive work with light. The more detailed herd in the foreground contrasts with the freer painting of the shepherd, vegetation and distant horizon. The muted palette of brown and green tones transitions into a light ochre sky and creates a peaceful atmosphere of the day's end. The painting is signed Henry Schouten at the bottom right. The work is set in a richly profiled gilded frame with ornamental decoration.
Henry Schouten (1857–1927) was a Belgian painter specializing in realistic depictions of animals, landscapes and rural life. from 1876 to 1881, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, where he was greatly influenced by the renowned Belgian animalist Alfred Verwee. Schouten became famous primarily for his paintings of sheep, cattle, horses, poultry and hunting dogs, which he often set in atmospheric landscapes with shepherds, peasants and hunters. His work is characterized by a careful capture of the anatomy and character of animals, a lively painterly style, harmonious colors and sensitive work with light. In addition to the name Henry or Henri Schouten, he also used several artistic pseudonyms during his career. His works were sought after even during his lifetime and still regularly appear on the European art market today.
