in this small-format drawing, herbert zumpe depicts a sleeping figure rendered in the new objectivity style. A young man lies fully clothed on a bed or sofa, his hands clasped behind his head. His striking face is defined by dark, thick eyebrows, a broad nose, and a large mouth framed by a gentle smile, likely alluding to pleasant dreams. A portion of a small side table is visible at the right edge of the sheet, upon which lie a cloth and the sleeper's glasses.
this work dates from the artist's early period in berlin.

from 1937 to 1939, wolfgang frankenstein (1918–2010) completed an apprenticeship at the "atelier triclair." after world war ii, zumpe remained in berlin (initially at olivaei pl. 10, later at nassauische straße 58) and continued working as a graphic designer, while also teaching applied graphics at the master school for graphic arts and book design in berlin.
