An exceptional watercolor on paper by the artist Timoteo Pérez Rubio (1896-1977), a renowned Spanish landscape and portrait painter. The work dates from 1969 and was painted during his time in Paris. It depicts a view of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris from Quai de la Tournelle, near the bridge. The cathedral is visible in the upper right corner, and below it lies the bridge that crosses the Seine. On a perfect diagonal, which forms the vanishing point, are the famous booksellers of the Seine. The landscape is rendered with magnificent watercolor strokes that define the elements through quick lines and subtle nuances, highlighting gray and green tones. The artist's signature is in the lower right corner, and the date and location in the lower left.
His career shows a clear evolution, beginning with an early style influenced by French Impressionism. This connection stems from a 1918 exhibition in Madrid, where he encountered the work of these artists, primarily Monet, Camille Pissarro, and Santiago Rusiñol. Later, he incorporated the new avant-garde trends he encountered during his time abroad, such as Cubism and Surrealism. Landscapes predominate in his work, but numerous portraits can also be found, including those of his wife, Rosa Chacel, and various acquaintances.
A native of Badajoz, he began his artistic training at the School of Arts and Crafts in his hometown. In 1915, he moved to Madrid to continue his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, where he received a landscape painting scholarship at the Paular School. It was there that he met his future wife, Rosa Chacel, whom he married in 1922. That same year, he traveled to Rome, affiliated with the Spanish Academy. His stay, which lasted until 1928, proved crucial in his artistic development, establishing him as a great landscape painter in the style of the French Impressionists.
Upon his return to Spain, he joined the Second Society of Iberian Artists, where he introduced the new avant-garde trends. This allowed him to win his first medal at the National Fine Arts Exhibition in 1932 and the position of deputy director of the Museum of Modern Art in Madrid in 1933. After the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, he played a fundamental role in defending Spain's artistic heritage, overseeing the relocation of the most important works from Madrid, especially those from the Prado Museum, which were moved to Valencia and later to Geneva. This alignment with the Republican side led to his exile after the war. Timoteo settled in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he continued his artistic work for the rest of his life. Years before his death, he returned to Spain in 1974, for the first and last time after his exile, to attend an exhibition of his work at the National Library.
This particular work is very special due to its exclusivity and provenance, as it comes from the collection inherited from the artist couple Timoteo Pérez Rubio and Rosa Chacel.
