A river meanders in the right part of the composition, while a village or architectural ensemble can be discerned in the background. The dominant presence of large trees, the emphasis on atmospheric effects, and the arrangement of small figures within the landscape are characteristic of 18th-century Italian Arcadian landscape painting. The work is attributed to Giovanni Battista Busiri (1698–1757), a Roman painter, draughtsman, and engraver specializing in landscapes and views of Rome and its surrounding countryside. Busiri is particularly known for his pastoral landscapes, imaginary or topographical views, and compositions inspired by the tradition of Gaspard Dughet and Claude Lorrain. His works were especially sought after by British travelers on the Grand Tour. The Louvre Museum notably holds The Village and Waterfalls of Tivoli, currently on loan to Busiri, while the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Morgan Library & Museum, and the National Gallery of Victoria hold works or drawings that allow us to draw parallels between his landscape style and that observed here. Note an old relining and some minor repainting. 19th-century frame. See less
