Bring a touch of old-world European romance and literary history to your collection with this magnificent antique German Historicism lidded presentation beer stein or master tankard, dating circa 1890–1905.
Beautifully cast from substantial, heavy solid pewter, this impressive architectural vessel weighs 3 lbs 1 oz and stands a striking 12 inches tall. It features an extraordinarily detailed Renaissance Revival motif centered on a romantic courtship allegory, depicting a classical female figure holding a heavy floral garland over an ornate, factory-cast interlocking script monogram shield. Flighted songbirds and delicate scrollwork accent the central relief scene, framed by traditional fluted canellure banding along the lower rim.
The crowning feature of this rare piece is its exquisite sculptural thumb-lift, which captures a precise silhouette of Germany’s legendary classical poet and playwright, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Honoring a cultural titan on the mechanism of a romantic presentation vessel makes this an incredibly cohesive, statement-making piece of late-Victorian Gründerzeit era metalwork.
Intricately cast into the central oval cartouche is an elaborate, interlocking script monogram. While highly stylized in the traditional late 19th-century German Chiffre fashion, the elegant calligraphy beautifully weaves together what appears to be the initials "G," "E," and "R" (or potentially a grand "G.R." family emblem). Because this monogram was seamlessly cast directly into the original relief design rather than being crudely engraved afterward, this stein was custom-commissioned directly from the foundry pattern books. It was built specifically as a bespoke milestone gift for a prominent European family—likely celebrating a grand wedding, alliance, or high-society birth during the height of the Belle Époque.

The multi-ring hinge mechanism is completely original, stable, and entirely unrepaired. True to its age and the soft nature of antique pewter, there is a minor, stable gap when the lid is closed, and some character-rich minor rim dings/flare warps along the bottom edge from historic use. As well as a small knick on the rim of the lid as shown. It stands sturdy and displays beautifully. We highly recommend leaving the authentic dark oxidation intact; clean only with mild soap and warm water if desired. less
