The artist has built the woodland scene through layers of fresh spring greens, soft blues and lavender, punctuated by cream, ochre, coral and deep earthy tones. Particularly appealing is the extensive use of palette-knife work, which gives the tree trunks, foliage and foreground wonderful texture, dimension and movement. Areas of heavier impasto allow the paint itself to become an important part of the composition.

Viewed from a distance, the painting reads immediately as a peaceful wooded landscape; viewed more closely, it becomes an almost abstract arrangement of color, texture and energetic marks.

The painting is unsigned and the artist remains unknown. Having bought, collected and sold art for approximately 50 years, I have found that a surprisingly large percentage of paintings and sculptures—perhaps 35% in my own experience—were never signed by their artists. Why an artist can create something so accomplished and then neglect to put his or her name on it has always puzzled me. Unfortunately, this painting is one of those works.

Regardless of attribution, it is the quality of the painting itself that caught my attention: confident handling of paint, wonderful palette-knife texture and an especially pleasing use of color.

The oil on canvas measures 16” H x 19” W and is presented in a simple black wood frame measuring 18” H x 22” W overall. The restrained frame provides a handsome contrast to the vibrant landscape without competing with it.

The painting is fitted with a hanging wire and is ready to hang and be perfect in your home.
